Guest Blog: Mindfulness and Meditation

Our Monthly guest blog features our partner Mind By Design® who provide empathetic. compassionate, personalized and discreet treatment with emphasis on professional evidence-based therapy to help adults and adolescents live happier, more fulfilled and productive lives by helping them overcome thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that negatively impact and limit them.

One of the most common techniques taught to individuals who are trying to manage stress or improve their mental health is mindfulness and meditation. It is often taught in therapy sessions, wellness classes, and described in every mental health article. However, many people do not know the difference between the two or how to properly utilize them in everyday life. Meditation is the practice of deep breathing and focusing on the current moment, thoughts, feelings and surroundings. It often includes mindfulness and is used to calm and explore our minds. Similarly, mindfulness is the ability to be fully present at the moment and possess an acute awareness of the now through your senses.

Mindfulness is an ability that we already possess that is used within meditation and can be improved with practice. Mindfulness and meditation can greatly reduce stress, treat depression, and improve cognition and mood. Taking 10 minutes a day to practice meditation and mindfulness will allow these benefits to come through and provide some peace of mind throughout a busy and stressful day.
